Sanford Saunders, a litigator with more than 20 years experience, focuses his practice on complex civil litigation and white collar criminal defense management with an emphasis on energy related matters. He has represented clients in domestic and international matters. He is a member of the Litigation and Criminal Justice Sections of the District of Columbia Bar Association, the Litigation Section of the American Bar Association, and contributed to the American Bar Association's Non-Grand Jury Criminal Subpoenas Report.

Significant Representations
  • Represents major integrated energy companies and their pipeline subsidiaries in federal and state courts and before the Department of Justice and other administrative agencies (e.g., Office of Pipelines and hazardous materials, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the National Transportation Safety Board) and arbitration panels.
    • Defended natural gas pipeline company in federal investigations (civil, criminal and administrative) and civil litigation concerning pipeline rupture and explosion in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
    • Defended liquids pipeline in federal and state investigation of product release and explosion in Brenham, Texas and parallel civil litigation, claims exceeded $400 million. Coordinated the responses in the parallel administrative proceedings and civil litigation that followed.
    • Defended natural gas pipeline in post - Order No. 636 restructuring litigation, claims exceeded $425 million.
    • Defended liquids pipelines in federal court and administrative litigation concerning discrimination, failure to provide service and breach of tariff claims.
    • Defended natural gas pipeline companies in multiple FERC Office of Oversight and Market Enforcement Office non-public investigations. Defended natural gas pipelines in fraud, RICO, civil conspiracy and breach of contract litigation.
  • Representation of chief executive of major international oil company in multiple criminal investigations, securities litigation and requests for international mutual legal assistance requests.
  • Representation of shareholders of international holding company in multiple criminal investigations securities litigation and requests for international mutual legal assistance requests. In Switzerland, secured the release of more than $4 billion in frozen assets.
  • Representation of CEO of investment fund in investigation for violations of FCPA and local law.
  • Lead trial attorney in litigation seeking to enforce judgements against foreign soverigns.
  • Defended major healthcare corporation in multiple securities class action and derivative cases and SEC investigation.
  • Defended the target of federal and state government investigations of the Seminole underground storage facility explosion in Brenham, Texas.
  • Handled the emergency response to contamination incidents at a Puerto Rico chemical manufacturing facility, as well as other discharge and spill investigations and resulting civil litigation and arbitration.
  • Served as co-trial counsel in Diamond M. v. Cliffs Drilling Company. That decision broadened owners' rights in the enforcement of maintenance provisions in charter party agreements.
  • Litigated issues ranging from allegations of antitrust violations to securities fraud and misappropriation of trade secrets.
  • Served as special counsel to the Council of the District of Columbia Committee on Local and Regional Affairs in its investigation of local transportation agreements.
  • Supervised the drafting of the New Economy Transformation Act of 2000, which was enacted by the City Council in December 2000.
