LGBTQ+ Equality

Since our inception, GT has built an inclusive firm based on equality, fairness, and authenticity. We understand the case for LGBTQ+ equality, and are proof positive that an inclusive, supportive environment is a better environment for all, including clients.

Committed+

GT is proud to stand with the LGBTQ+ community, and those who support equality and inclusion for all. We are active in social causes, case matters, and other actions that strengthen protections for the LGBTQ+ community. We are dedicated to the idea that every person deserves the opportunity to be safe from discrimination in life and at work and should be able to proudly and openly bring his or her true self to every opportunity.

GT is one of two global sponsors of Out Leadership, which is a mission-driven business advisory organization dedicated to the idea that inclusion of LGBTQ+ people at all levels of business, and particularly within leadership, creates positive business impact.

GT hosted Out Leadership’s U.S. Summit in 2015, 2016, and 2017 and have participated yearly in related Out Leadership VIP Dinners, hosted by U.S. Trust, where GT’s current and former CEOs spoke on panels with U.S. Trust’s senior leaders.

As a global sponsor, the firm also regularly hosts and participates in Out Leadership events and programs, including regularly partnering with the OutNEXT Global Summit, which includes the participation of Greenberg Traurig LGBTQ+ associates. GT CEO Brian L. Duffy serves on the Out Leadership Global Advisory Board and GT Shareholder John Richards serves on the Out Leadership Council.

Engagement and Community Leadership

The work of the members of GT’s LGBTQ+ Affinity Group, alliances, and firm leadership has positioned the firm as a leader committed to supporting this community. Some of that work includes forging important relationships with key organizations. We actively participate in these organizations and also provide financial support. We have listed a few of these relationships and activities herein, further demonstrating that for GT, diversity IS action.

We understand and practice inclusion and count LGBTQ+ people at every level of our organization as evidenced by our score of 100 percent on the 2018 and 2017 Corporate Equality Index published by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.

Lambda Legal. Lambda Legal, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of LGBT+ people and everyone living with HIV. Shareholder John R. Richards has served for six years as a member of Lambda Legal’s National Board of Directors and the firm is proud to routinely support events nationwide.

National LGBT Bar Association & Lavender Law Career Fair & Conference. The firm regularly participates in the National LGBT Bar Association event to address inclusion of LGBT+ candidates in law firm recruitment efforts.

National Gay & Lesbian Task Force. The mission of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is to build the grassroots power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. We are a longtime sponsor of the annual Task Force Dinner.

Equality Illinois, Equality California, and Equality Florida. These are strategic, state-based organizations that advocate for LGBT+ people. Attorneys and business staff routinely attend and participate in their events. For example, Equality Florida held a benefit and time of remembrance on the one-year anniversary of the Pulse nightclub in GT’s Orlando office.

The OUT Miami Foundation Gala. The firm supported OUT Miami Foundation’s annual event for LGBT+ people and allies to support an engaged, empowered, and united LGBT+ community in Miami-Dade County, Florida.

Services & Advocacy for LGBT Elders (SAGE). SAGE is the United States’ largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBT+ older adults. In June 2017, members of the firm’s New York office served dinner at the Sage Center Midtown, during the firm’s annual Community Service Week.

International Bar Association. To coincide with the 2017 M&A in Latin America Conference presented by the International Bar Association (IBA), GT joined with a local firm to host a first-of-its-kind LGBT Seminar in Latin America. Our attorneys actively participate in the activities of the LGBT Committee of the IBA.

Pro Bono Representation. As part of its global pro bono efforts, GT supports and offers a hands-on approach to legal issues critical to the LGBT+ community. For example, GT represented two foster children in adoption proceedings that led to the elimination and declaration as unconstitutional of Florida’s 20-year-old ban on the adoption of children by gay individuals.
