Scott picks political allies, education experts for constitutional commission

Gov. Rick Scott unveiled his appointments to the vicennial Constitution Revision Commission on Friday, giving some top supporters a large role in rewriting the state’s governing document.

The commission is tasked with reviewing proposed changes to the state constitution every 20 years. The governor has outsize influence over the 37-member commission, with 15 appointments, including the chairman and executive director.

“These members stood out as exemplary choices for this historic Commission whose diverse backgrounds and experience in education, business and policy will ensure we continue to champion policies that make Florida the best place for families for generations to come,” Scott said in a statement.

Prominent insurance lobbyist Fred Karlinsky, one of the biggest names in the industry, was also selected by Scott, after serving on the governor’s statewide finance committee during the his re-election bid. He subsequently served as a co-chair of Scott’s 2014 inauguration.
