Greenberg Traurig Named Florida Regional Litigation Department of the Year by The American Lawyer

Tampa office litigation matters were important to GT’s winning nomination

TAMPA – Jan. 7, 2020 – Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, P.A. received the Florida Regional Litigation Department of the Year award from The American Lawyer at the publication’s 2019 American Lawyer Industry Awards held Dec. 4 in New York City. The firm’s Tampa office was recognized for two precedent-setting matters.

The competition recognizes top regional litigation departments in California, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Texas. The award honors firms for the impact their work has on clients and industries, as well as their creativity in dealing with high-stakes matters.

The American Lawyer noted that “from the Florida Supreme Court to the U.S. Supreme Court and at stops in between, Greenberg Traurig successfully argued matters ranging from constitutional challenges to class certifications and requirements for expert testimony.”

“We are very honored to be recognized by The American Lawyer for our talent and commitment to clients, who are always our first priority,” said David B. Weinstein, managing shareholder of Greenberg Traurig’s Tampa office and chair of the firm’s Environmental & Toxic Tort Litigation Practice. “As their passionate advocates, we utilize all of our significant experience, knowledge, and creativity to help clients achieve their goals.”

In Williams v. Mosaic Fertilizer, Greenberg Traurig Tampa litigators excluded an expert toxicologist, which resulted in a favorable ruling to its client. Weinstein and his team then successfully represented Mosaic Fertilizer at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, which established an important precedent that regulatory standards are protective and not predictive.

In a second matter, Leidy Villaman v. United Parcel Service, Inc. and UPS International General Services Co., Tampa Shareholder Richard C. McCrea Jr. and his team set new legal precedent in their representation of UPS regarding the Florida Private Whistleblower Act.

Over the past year, Greenberg Traurig’s 112-member Florida Litigation Practice also worked tirelessly as an advocate for public interests – from defending amendments on Florida ballots, to the right to free speech, to ensuring access to justice.
