Philip I. Person Wins Emerging Diversity Leader Award

LOS ANGELES – Oct. 3, 2022 – Greenberg Traurig, LLP Shareholder Philip I. Person will receive the Marci Rubin Emerging Diversity Leader award at the California Minority Counsel Program (CMCP) Business Conference’s Recognition Luncheon Oct. 14 in Los Angeles.

Winners of the award are practicing attorneys who have demonstrated an active commitment to diversifying the bar and exhibit strong leadership qualities. CMCP is dedicated to promoting diversity in the legal profession by providing attorneys of color with opportunity and access to professional and business development, according to the organization.

“I know Philip to be a tireless champion and mentor for younger lawyers both in and outside of our firm,” Greenberg Traurig Shareholder and Northern California Chair Charles S. Birenbaum said. “He is a man of stellar character, and his commitment to a more diverse workplace and profession, and to creating a more just and equal society, harmonizes with the core values of our firm’s comprehensive approach to client service.”

Also at the conference, Greenberg Traurig Silicon Valley Shareholder and Benefits & Compensation Practice and Asian American Affinity Group Co-Chair Magan Pritam Ray will give opening remarks for an interactive panel sponsored by the firm, titled “I’ve Got Your Back: Supporting Women of Color.” The panel will explore allyship with women of color and other groups.

“Philip emphasizes working with underrepresented and first-generation attorneys and future attorneys through the lens of someone who has navigated the specific hurdles and pitfalls encountered by these communities as a law student and a lawyer,” Pritam Ray said.

Person is co-chair of the Greenberg Traurig African American Inclusion Network (GAIN) affinity group and volunteers for mentoring programs such as the Council on Legal Education Opportunity, Inc. (CLEO), the Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP), and the Bar Association of San Francisco. He was recently named a 2022 Fellow by the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD).

“As a law student, I believe that I benefited greatly from my experiences with these mentorship programs. I am honored to be able to give my time to support them, paying the opportunity forward to the next generation of lawyers,” Person said.

Person, a member of the Labor & Employment Practice in the firm’s San Francisco office and co-lead of the California Wage & Hour Taskforce, focuses on representing employers in wrongful termination, harassment, discrimination, retaliation, wage and hour, trade secret misappropriation, non-competition, non-solicitation, and whistleblower claims, as well as labor and employment arbitrations. Additionally, Person counsels and advises clients on various employment issues and coordinates with executives and management to develop plans to mitigate employer risk.

He co-hosts The Performance Review, a California labor and employment podcast.
