Greenberg Traurig Miami Attorneys Present Legal Seminar at SwimShow in Miami Beach

MIAMI July 18, 2016 Greenberg Traurig attorneys Danielle N. Garno, Paul B. Ranis, Donald S. Stein and Sandy Chiu presented a seminar titled “Legal Issues in the Fashion Industry: What every designer and brand should know” as part of the 2016 SwimShow held July 16-19 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Established in 1982, the SwimShow is the largest swimwear trade show in the world, featuring thousands of buyers from over 60 countries.

  • Garno, a shareholder in the Miami Litigation Practice, presented on the Do’s and Don’ts of fashion advertising specifically, the FTC disclosure rules as they relate to bloggers and social media.  Garno focuses her law practice on issues faced by the fashion community, including the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, trademark infringement, anti-counterfeiting, employment, and general business litigation. Her practice also includes working on complex civil litigation with an emphasis on white-collar defense and fraud actions.

  • Ranis, a Fort Lauderdale Litigation shareholder, discussed the legal and practical considerations for unpaid interns in the fashion industry. Ranis concentrates his broad litigation practice in employment-related matters and commercial litigation. He has represented local and national clients, in numerous jury and non-jury trials involving discrimination, retaliation, harassment, restrictive covenants, as well as nationwide class and collective wage and hour issues.

  • Stein, a shareholder in the Washington D.C. Global Trade and Investment Practice, presented on United States import compliance and provided a brief overview of import processes and procedures, as well as an overview of FTC textile and apparel labeling requirements. Stein focuses his practice on federal regulatory issues, and in particular U.S. Customs law, as well as other agencies’ rules applicable to imports.

  • Chiu, an associate in the Miami Corporate & Securities Practice, spoke about intellectual property in the fashion industry, specifically trademark, copyright, and patent protection. Chiu focuses her practice on intellectual property in general corporate and securities matters. She handles intellectual property worldwide portfolio management for many public and private companies and also advises clients on brand development as well as trademark use, registration, prosecution and enforcement.
