Greenberg Traurig's Ian Ballon Return Speaker at USC Intellectual Property Institute

LOS ANGELES – Mar 21, 2017 – Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP’sIan C. Ballon spoke at USC’s 2017 Intellectual Property Institute, which was held March 20-21, at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows in Santa Monica.

Susan L. Heller, chair of Greenberg Traurig’s Global Trademarks and Brand Management Group, and co-chair of the firm’s global Women’s Initiative, is an Executive Committee member of the USC IPI and has been on the Planning Committee since the Institute’s inception, 14 years ago.

The Intellectual Property Institute has forged a reputation for gathering national speakers to analyze sophisticated topics and provide practical takeaways to attendees. Focusing on copyright, patent and trademark law, the Institute featured morning plenary sessions, a luncheon keynote address, afternoon tracked breakout sessions, and six networking opportunities, including a special networking breakfast for women in IP and a hosted cocktail reception at the end of the day.

Ballon was a litigator panelist for the IP Remedies Roundtable and Workshop. This interactive workshop explored how financial remedies and injunctive relief should be evaluated and presented in cases involving multiple types of IP rights. The panel dealt with questions including:

  • How does the law for damages in the form of lost profits, reasonable royalties, diminution in value and defendants' profits, and the law for injunctive relief, compare for different IP rights?
  • How should financial remedies and the availability of injunctive relief be determined when multiple types of IP rights cover the same activity?
  • What methodologies should be used when the damages and remedies law is more developed for some IP rights, or conflicts with other IP rights?

Attendees engaged in roundtable discussions in the context of a hypothetical fact pattern and heard from legal, damages and judicial experts in the field.

Ballon is an IP and internet/mobile litigator who co-chairs Greenberg Traurig’s Global Intellectual Property & Technology Practice. He represents technology, media, and entertainment companies in intellectual property, internet, and mobile-related complex litigation, including copyright, DMCA, DTSA, trademark, patent and trade secret litigation, as well as the defense of data privacy, security breach, and TCPA class action suits.
