Greenberg Traurig Continues Bay Area Expansion; Grows IP Litigation Group

SAN FRANCISCO – Oct. 23, 2019 – Continuing its strategic growth in the Bay Area, global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP added intellectual property litigators Howard Chen and Harold “Hal” H. Davis as shareholders in its San Francisco office. They join from K&L Gates, where they were partners. Chen will also co-chair Greenberg Traurig’s China practice.

“These new additions underscore the firm's strategy and commitment to serve cross border deals, linking technology companies between the Bay Area and Asia,” said Michelle Ferreira, who co-manages the firm’s San Francisco and Silicon Valley offices. “Howard, and Hal have over 15 years of experience working with Asian companies doing business in the United States, and have the knowledge, practice experience, and skills that will contribute to our already deep bench of award-winning attorneys who are focused on delivering quality and value for clients across sectors, whether locally or on a global scale.”

Chen has a background in the semiconductor and telecom industries, and started his Asia practice in 2000. Over the years, he has represented Asia technology leaders and leading technology companies in the United States on intellectual property strategies, licensing, litigation and other commercial disputes. With a keen understanding of the business environment in China and strong sense of Asia's business culture, Chen understands the objectives of companies involved in cross-border transactions. He is a well-recognized legal advisor in the Asia practice in the Bay area.

Davis is an intellectual property trial attorney and frequently tries cases in high value patent, trade secret, unfair competition, and trademark disputes. Davis has tried cases in various intellectual property matters and actions in federal courts and before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) on behalf of companies in a broad range of areas including computer design and manufacturing, semiconductor manufacturing, lithium ion batteries, computer software, smartphone and internet backbone hardware, internet switching and hardware services, electronics, biotechnology research, telecommunications providers, and other technologies.

“The addition of Howard and Hal to our IP litigation group demonstrates our firm’s commitment to hiring top practitioners, and increases the bandwidth to service Asian companies in the Bay Area. Their experience in the IP arena, particularly related to companies doing business in Asia, is a value-add for our global team,” said Brian Duffy, Greenberg Traurig Chief Executive Officer.

“We are excited to join the firm and utilize and leverage the entrepreneurial spirit of Greenberg Traurig along with its international focus and footprint, allowing us to link the technology generators of the future between Silicon Valley, China, Israel, and Europe,” Chen said. “The firm offers unique opportunities as one unified firm helping clients through empowered lawyers on the ground in each of our local markets and practices. For example, Greenberg Traurig’s presence in Israel is unique. We are the only major international law firm with a multidisciplinary registered office in Tel Aviv, one of the world’s leading innovation and business centers. In the United States, we are a truly national firm with more U.S. offices than any other firm in the Am Law 200 Top 10.”

Davis added, “We are excited about joining GT’s IP litigation team. We appreciate the collaborative and client-focused nature of GT, and we anticipate leveraging the platform to provide superior service to our current and future clients.  It is also a great feeling to join a number of well-respected colleagues who I have known for several years.”

In the past year, Greenberg Traurig has significantly grown its capabilities in the Bay Area and throughout California adding 14 new shareholders.
