Maura Miller Joins Greenberg Traurig in New York as a Shareholder in the Global Litigation Practice; Sylvia Simson Joins as Of Counsel

NEW YORK – Oct. 15, 2019 – Continuing to strategically grow its New York office, global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP has added Maura E. Miller as a shareholder and Sylvia E. Simson as of counsel in its Global Litigation Practice.

“We could not be more excited about both of these hires. Maura has extensive experience handling large regulatory and internal investigations worldwide. This is a growing area for our firm and Maura brings great depth and breadth to this practice. We are experiencing an increasing demand for these services from both long-standing and new clients. Maura will play a big role for us in this space, and her exceptional experience representing top-tier companies and individuals on their most challenging matters will be incredibly valuable to us and to our clients. Sylvia has a very broad litigation background and has done significant work in commercial, environmental, and mass tort litigation. Sylvia really strengthens our already broad bench in New York and around the U.S.,” said Richard A. Edlin, a vice chair of Greenberg Traurig as well as chair of both the Litigation Practice in New York and the Business & Regulatory Financial Services Litigation Group and a member of the firm's executive committee.

Miller joined Greenberg Traurig from Sullivan & Cromwell, while Simson joined from Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan.

“Adding first class talent, like Maura and Sylvia, to a practice area critical to our clients is just one example of how we are always looking for and taking advantage of strategic growth opportunities to elevate the GT client experience,” said Stephen L. Rabinowitz, managing shareholder of the law firm’s New York office.

“Maura and Sylvia also further our commitment to diversity, not only in our firm in general, but specifically for our litigation and trial practice, where diversity has never been more important. Judges and clients expect and have a right to diversity in their litigation and trial teams, and we are delighted that both Maura and Sylvia believed in us as much as we believe in them. Greenberg Traurig is well-known for its commitment to diversity, and as the number one firm in the country in terms of litigation matters handled over the last 10 years, we embrace the need to continue to expand our team with talented lawyers such as Maura and Sylvia,” Edlin added.

Miller has broad experience representing U.S. and non-U.S. corporations and financial institutions in state, federal, and international investigations, as well as in proceedings involving allegations of Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctions violations, violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, money laundering violations, and securities fraud. She will also be part of the firm’s Financial Services Litigation Practice. She received a J.D. from Cornell Law School where she was Notes and Admissions editor for the Cornell International Law Journal. She received a B.A. from the University of Washington. She served as a clerk for the Hon. Robert E. Gerber, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. Previously, she was a program analyst with the U.S. Department of Commerce, Office of Inspector General. She is on the boards of Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert as well as Smarthistory.

Simson’s experience includes litigating contractual disputes, toxic exposure claims, failure to warn allegations, business torts, bankruptcy claims, insurance coverage issues, breach of fiduciary duty and fraud allegations, purported product defects, and alleged False Claims Act violations. She has deep experience with multi-district litigation, class actions, and the coordination of related actions in both federal and state courts. Simson has assisted clients in the pharmaceutical, energy, chemicals, technology, financial services, consumer products, insurance, and building materials sectors, among others. She will also be part of the following firm practice groups: Financial Services Litigation and Products Liability & Mass Torts. She has a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School, where she was Executive Articles Editor for the Brooklyn Journal of International Law and a member of the Moot Court Honors Society. She received a B.A., cum laude, from New York University. She was a Judicial Intern to the Hon. Jerome Feller, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of New York.

“We look forward to working closely with colleagues firmwide and adding more depth to Greenberg Traurig’s award-winning Litigation Practice,” Miller and Simson said in a joint statement. “Specifically, the firm’s litigation group has a long, impressive list of accolades not possible without clients placing their trust in the team and the firm.”
