Dongdoo Choi (최동두)


Dongdoo Choi is a shareholder in our International Arbitration and Litigation Practice, focusing on international disputes and arbitration. He has handled cases under most major institutional rules and ad-hoc UNCITRAL Rules. His dispute resolution experience involves a wide range of subject matters including M&A, joint ventures, intellectual property, shipbuilding, infrastructure, foreign investment, commodity transactions, and sports. He also often handles litigation matters in the United States and represents clients in negotiations in their strategic corporate projects and government investigations.

Dongdoo is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, U.K., and has authored several published papers on international arbitration, which have been cited and referenced as authority in procedural disputes in international arbitration. His paper, “Choice of Law Rules Applicable for International Arbitration Agreements” (2015) 11 Asian International Arbitration Journal 105, was recently cited in very significant case law in the fields of international arbitration rendered by the United Kingdom Supreme Court, “Enka Insaat ve Sanayi AS v OOO “Insurance Company Chubb” [2020] UKSC 38.

  • Advised a Korean government-controlled public utilities company in an international arbitration dispute against a foreign government.
  • Represented a subcontractor in a construction dispute under the ICC Rules.°
  • Represented the controlling shareholder in a joint venture dispute under the HKIAC Rules.°
  • Represented the shipbuilder in a shipbuilding dispute arbitration under the LMAA Rules.°
  • Represented the buyer in a commodity sale and purchase dispute under the HKIAC Rules.°
  • Represented the buyer in a post-M&A dispute under the SIAC Rules.°
  • Represented athletes in an anti-doping rules related sports arbitration under the CAS Rules.°
  • Represented and successfully defended an automotive components maker in U.S. courts in product liability cases.
  • Represented and successfully defended a Korean optical component maker in a U.S. ITC investigation and in a parallel district court proceeding over patent infringement claims raised by the client’s U.S. competitor.
  • Represented as the lead in-house counsel a Korean conglomerate in the United States International Trade Commission §337 Investigation over IP infringement claims.°
  • Represented the corporate employer in a wrongful termination dispute in the California state court.°
  • Represented Korean funds against U.S. borrowers over a real estate development project in the California state court.°
  • Managed acquisition of a Japanese electronics parts maker by a Korean °
  • Managed setting up of a JVC between a Korean company and a Swedish company.°
  • Managed divestiture of client’s overseas manufacturing subsidiaries.°
  • Represented Korea’s largest infrastructure fund in Korea in Project Finance Deal of the Year by IFLR (Pusan New Port Project).°
  • Represented Korea’s largest ship fund in several ship financing projects.°
