Senior Director

Maria C. Garcia serves as a Senior Director of the firm’s Government Law & Policy Practice in Sacramento. She has more than 15 years of experience working for and with California government. As a former Legislative Director in the California State Capitol, she has keen knowledge and understanding of California’s government and political landscape.

Maria represents individual companies, non-profit organizations, and trade associations before the legislature and administration. She has helped her clients get legislation enacted, amended, and defeated. Maria has also spearheaded multi-sector coalitions to work on mutually beneficial policies; coordinated clients’ legislative action days; and assisted with state licensing and funding eligibility. Maria’s clients in the insurance, employment, environmental, and manufacturing industries keeps her current on many major broad-ranging polices and in constant connection with state agencies such as the California Department of Insurance, Contractors State Licensing Board, Air Resources Board, California Energy Commission, and the Natural Resources Agency.

Experience

  • Obtained millions in state funding for expansion of client services statewide related to telecommunications in emergency and disaster response.
  • Worked with Contractor’s State License Board on behalf of various clients to address issues relating to licensure requirements, background checks, and scope of practice.
  • Developed a coalition of local government representatives, builders, environmental groups, labor unions, and affordable housing advocates to secure passage of new state laws that streamline housing construction projects, increase funding sources, and provide builder incentives for affordable housing.
  • Represented a major insurer to oppose legislation that would have dramatically and negatively impacted the auto insurance market in California.
  • Worked with non-profit organizations to acquire additional funding, services, and resources for adults with developmental disabilities.
