Weisun Rao, Ph.D.


Dr. Weisun Rao focuses his practice primarily on intellectual property law and business law. He is experienced in developing IP strategies and building and managing IP portfolios for legal and business opportunities in countries such as the United States and China. Additionally, Dr. Rao advises clients on monetizing and enforcing their IP rights throughout the world. He counsels clients on IP and business issues in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, nutraceutical, medical device, chemical, advanced material, and mechanical industries. He is also experienced with due diligence and counter-diligence investigations; negotiating and drafting technology transfer agreements and licensing agreements; and providing patentability, validity, infringement, and freedom-to-operate opinions.

Dr. Rao is routinely involved in business transactions such as cross-border mergers and acquisitions. He is particularly experienced in advising non-Chinese clients on the legal environment and best business practices in China and advising Chinese businesses interested in entering or expanding in the U.S. market.

Dr. Rao’s clients include entrepreneurs, companies of all sizes, angel investors, venture capital firms, universities, and research institutes in the United States, Asia, and Europe.

  • Represented a Chinese pharmaceutical R&D company focused on the development and discovery of groundbreaking small-molecule drugs for the treatment of cancers, infectious diseases, and related conditions by developing and managing a robust patent portfolio and entering into a worldwide patent licensing and joint development agreement and with a global pharmaceutical company. This was the first transaction of its kind in China.°
