Greenberg Traurig’s Ian C. Ballon and Kurt A. Kappes Spoke at 14th Annual Rocky Mountain Intellectual Property and Technology Institute

SILICON VALLEY, Calif. – June 21, 2016 – Ian C. Ballon, co-chair of the Global Intellectual Property & Technology Practice and shareholder at global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, and Kurt A. Kappes, co-managing shareholder of Greenberg Traurig’s Sacramento office and co-chair of the national Labor & Employment Practice’s Non-Compete, Trade Secret and Employment Contract Litigation team, spoke Thursday, June 2 at the 14th Annual Rocky Mountain Intellectual Property and Technology Institute. According to its website, the conference provided a real-world discussion of developments across all areas of IP and tech law.

From 11:10 a.m. – 12 p.m., Ballon gave a 2016 Copyright Update. From 11:10 a.m. – 12 p.m., Kappes gave a 2016 Trade Secret Update.

Ballon represents Internet, technology, mobile, and other companies in intellectual property, privacy, and security litigation, including the defense of data privacy, security breach, behavioral advertising, and TCPA class action suits. He is also the author of the leading treatise on Internet law, E-Commerce and Internet Law: Treatise with Forms 2nd edition, the 4-volume set published by West (www.IanBallon.net). In addition, he is the author of The Complete CAN-SPAM Act Handbook (West 2008) and The Complete State Security Breach Notification Compliance Handbook (West 2009). He also serves as executive director of Stanford University Law School’s Center for E-Commerce, which hosts the annual Best Practices Conference where lawyers, scholars, and judges are regularly featured and interact. Ballon has brought or defended significant and often cutting edge suits involving computer software, the Internet, and mobile technology. He also chairs privacy conferences for PLI, LSI, and other organizations. He became CIPP certified in 2011 by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).

Kappes has extensive trial and pretrial experience. He has represented clients in many complex litigation cases involving class actions, commercial claims, trade secrets and employee mobility, computer fraud, non-compete, products liability, professional malpractice, insurance bad faith, qui tam actions, unfair competition, Business and Professions Code Section 17200 actions, and SOX proceedings. He also represents clients in labor and employment issues, including advisory matters, trade secret audits, contracts, discrimination claims, whistleblower cases, and wrongful termination litigation. Kappes is a contributor to the Association of Corporate Counsel’s 2015 InfoPAK titled, “Fifty State Survey on Covenants Not to Compete,” as well as to the California Continuing Education of the Bar’s second edition of “Trade Secrets Practice in California.” He is also a visiting professor at the University of California Davis School of Law.
