Greenberg Traurig’s Cesar Alvarez Receives ALM Lifetime Achievement Award

Firm also receives National Litigation Firm of the Year for Products Liability and Regional Litigation Firm of the Year for Georgia

NEW YORK – Dec. 6, 2018 – Cesar L. Alvarez, senior chairman of global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from American Lawyer Media (ALM) at a black-tie awards event in New York, Dec. 5. The award honors attorneys whose remarkable careers have shaped the legal profession.

In addition, during the event, The American Lawyer Industry Awards, Greenberg Traurig’s litigators were recognized with multiple awards.

Greenberg Traurig won The American Lawyer’s National Litigation Department of the Year for Products Liability Award. Atlanta based Lori G. Cohen, co-chair of the firm's Global Litigation Practice and chair of its Pharmaceutical, Medical Device & Health Care Litigation Practice, and New York shareholders Russell “Chip” A. Gaudreau and Daniel I.A. Smulian, accepted the award for the team.

Greenberg Traurig’s Atlanta office won the award for Regional Litigation Department of the Year in Georgia. Greenberg Traurig Co-President Ernest LaMont Greer, who is a litigation shareholder in Atlanta, and Cohen accepted the award on behalf of the group. This is the fourth consecutive year the firm’s Atlanta litigation department has been recognized by ALM publications. Florida and New Jersey have also been recognized in previous years.

In addition, the Litigation team in the firm’s Philadelphia office was a finalist for The American Lawyer Regional Litigation Department of the Year award for Pennsylvania.

In his speech accepting the award, Alvarez thanked his parents, the firm, the United States, and the Jewish community for making success possible for him, a Cuban political refugee who came to the United States as a teenager and went on to become CEO of Greenberg Traurig, the first Hispanic to hold that role at major law firm. During his 13-year run as CEO of the firm, Greenberg Traurig went from 325 attorneys in eight offices, mostly in Florida, to more than 1,850 in 37 offices around the world.

“This award is not just for me,” Alvarez said when accepting the award. “This is for the things that the firm achieved. We built a different kind of firm. I am very thankful for my firm and my partners who together worked to help create this success.”

When Alvarez became CEO of Greenberg Traurig in 1996, he says that he knew the time was right for expansion in the nation’s growth states. His philosophy was that Greenberg Traurig could serve clients nationwide if it was active in both the financial centers of the United States, and the growth states, where funds were plentiful to finance new projects and businesses. Rounding out the strategy, Greenberg Traurig also focused on building a presence in political centers to serve clients’ lobbying initiatives. The firm crisscrossed the country and the globe in its rapid expansion, which landed Greenberg Traurig on the National Law Journal’s list of fastest-growing firms in the United States.
