Glenn Newman to Participate in The Rooftops Conference NYC 2020

NEW YORK – Oct. 29, 2020 – Glenn Newman, Tax Practice shareholder in global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP’s New York City office, will participate in New York Law School’s The Rooftops Conference NYC 2020 on Oct. 30. This year’s free, virtual event is the 10th annual symposium for the not-for-profit sector focused on the role of real estate that is owned, leased, or hosted physical space in the operations, financial performance, and achievement of mission by not-for-profit organizations of all sizes and mission types.

Newman, who is presenting a “New York Property Tax Exemption Update,”  will offer insight on new developments, recent court decisions, and administrative determinations on property tax exemptions. These issues are of particular importance to health care providers, educational institutions, and religious and charitable organizations facing challenging times.

Newman handles tax planning and controversy matters involving state and local taxes, including personal income tax, corporate tax, sales tax, and real property transfer taxes, as well as real estate tax and incentive programs.  His practice includes handling audits and litigation involving income tax, including residency matters, sales and use tax, hotel taxes, and real estate transfer taxes in New York and other states.

Prior to re-entering private practice, Newman was the president of the New York City Tax Commission and the NYC Tax Appeals Tribunal, the agencies that hear and determine disputes of New York City property and business income and excise taxes. He is a member of the Commissioners’ Advisory Panels of the New York State and City Tax Departments and previously served as chair of the National Conference of State Tax Judges.

About Greenberg Traurig's Tax Practice: To stay competitive in today's global marketplace, international companies must seek out greater efficiency in their tax planning and compliance, including coordinating tax decisions from country to country. For U.S. operations, an environment of increased scrutiny – including passage of more restrictive legislation and a spike in audit activity at every level – is quickly becoming the norm, likewise spurring a need for greater self-evaluation and for more frequent representation in controversies and litigation with tax authorities. Greenberg Traurig’s multidisciplinary tax team works closely with clients to address these and other tax planning needs, as well as tax controversies and litigation issues.
