Paul J. Murphy has broad experience in virtually all forms of business litigation, representing clients across a wide range of industries, including higher education, public and private construction, and health care. A seasoned trial attorney, Paul has tried numerous jury and jury-waived cases and has orally argued before a broad spectrum of state and federal trial and appellate courts. He also appears frequently in adversary proceedings before various state and federal agencies and tribunals, including the American Arbitration Association.

  • As Co-Chair of Greenberg Traurig’s Education Group, Paul represents a number of diverse colleges and universities in complex construction, real estate, contract, labor and employment, and regulatory matters. These have involved disputes over the construction of athletic complexes, dormitories, stadiums, and other key infrastructure projects; disputes with key vendors (technology and otherwise) to the institutions Paul represents; disputes with cities and towns in Town/Gown-type matters; successful union awareness (faculty) campaigns; and defense before various courts, as well as federal and state agencies with jurisdiction in civil rights, discrimination, Title IX, Title IV (financial aid), and False Claims Act (FCA) matters.
  • Paul has also assisted in the formation and ongoing operation of two separate Division III intercollegiate athletic conferences. He also recently obtained initial authorization and approval from the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education for the first new, private, higher education institution in the Commonwealth to be given degree-granting authority in more than twenty years.
  • Paul and other key members of the GT Higher Education team have been retained by various public university systems to provide advice and counsel in connection with the use of P3 financing structures to construct, finance, operate, and maintain key revenue generating investment assets, so as to alleviate pressures upon bond proceeds and more conventional financing streams.
  • Paul advises diverse construction industry clients involved in both private and public construction projects, claims, litigation, and business torts in the federal and state trial courts.
  • Paul represents health care providers, including several private ambulance service providers, in defense of FCA allegations, and proceedings brought by the U.S. Office of the Inspector General (“OIG”) and other federal agencies, as well as various state attorneys general.
