Greenberg Traurig Shareholders Chair, Speak at PLI’s Annual Institute on Privacy and Data Security Law

CHICAGO - June 9, 2017 - Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP’s Françoise Gilbert and Ian C. Ballon will speak at PLI's 18th Annual Institute on Privacy and Data Security Law, June 12 - 13, at the Hotel Allegro in Chicago. The conference will focus on the critical legal issues relating to information privacy and cybersecurity faced by companies that use personal information.

Gilbert, a shareholder in the Silicon Valley office, has been co-chair of the PLI Privacy and Security Law Institute for the past 17 years and will be giving opening remarks. She will speak on the session, “The Impact of GDPR & Privacy Shield,” and will discuss key principles of the GDPR, recent guidelines published by the Article 29 Working Party, as well as the proposed draft of the E-Privacy Regulation.

Ballon, co-chair of Greenberg Traurig’s Global Intellectual Property & Technology Practice and a shareholder in the Silicon Valley and Los Angeles offices, will be speaking on “Managing Privacy and Data Security Litigation” and will discuss important trends and case law developments involving data privacy and security breach class action litigation. Ballon, among other things, defends high profile data privacy and security breach putative class action suits.

Gilbert focuses her practice and research on U.S. and global data privacy and cybersecurity in a wide variety of markets, including, among others, internet, big data, connected devices, sensors, artificial intelligence, robotics, and other emerging technologies. Her clients include large, multinational entities, big data analytics companies, connected device developers, cloud service providers, publishers, internet stores, insurance companies, financial institutions, manufacturers, service providers, trade associations, non-profit organizations, software developers, and others. Gilbert is the author of the two-volume treatise “Global Privacy and Security Law,” published by Wolters Kluwer (www.globalprivacybook.com), and the co-author of a dozen other law books, including for example “Robotic Technologies Law,” published by Larcier, and “Internet of Things and Data Analytics,” published by Wiley. She has received law degrees and obtained bar admissions both in the United States and in France, and holds CIPP/US, CIPP/EU, and CIPM certifications from the International Association of Privacy Professionals.

Ballon represents technology, media, and entertainment companies in intellectual property, internet, and mobile-related complex litigation, including the defense of data privacy, security breach, and TCPA class action suits. He is also the author of the leading treatise on internet law, E-Commerce and Internet Law: Treatise with Forms 2nd edition, the 5-volume set published by West (www.IanBallon.net). In addition, he is the author of The Complete CAN-SPAM Act Handbook (West 2008) and The Complete State Security Breach Notification Compliance Handbook (West 2009). He also serves as executive director of Stanford University Law School’s Center for E-Commerce. In addition to his JD and LLM, Ballon holds the CIPP/US certification from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
