MEXICO CITY – Dec. 12, 2017 – Shareholder Víctor Manuel Frías Garcés and Associate Elba Bethel Gutiérrez Castillo of Greenberg Traurig’s Mexico City office participated as panelists during the Global Alliance for Justice Education’s (GAJE) 9th Worldwide Conference on Dec. 9 at Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Puebla, Mexico.
GAJE is an alliance of people committed to achieving justice through education. Hosted by Mexico Clinics Network (Red Clínicas México), an informal network of professors and legal clinic coordinators throughout Mexico, this year’s conference explored the role that legal education plays in transforming societies and defending the values of justice.
In a panel titled, “Social engagement from the private sector: the two-way learning process between Law Firms and Legal Clinics,” Frías Garcés and Gutiérrez Castillo explained how clinical legal education programs can develop future pro bono-minded attorneys equipped with the skills, knowledge, and strong sense of ethical obligation needed to achieve greater access to justice.
Greenberg Traurig’s Mexico City office has become a pioneer in pro bono work within Mexico by appointing a dedicated lawyer to coordinate its pro bono activities and investing over 3,000 hours in 2017 to pro bono work. Through an alliance with UNHCR Mexico, the UN Refugee Agency, the firm’s Mexico City office also became the first law firm in Mexico to offer pro bono services to UNHCR to represent asylum seekers in Mexico.
