Greenberg Traurig Conducts 6th Annual “Lawyer for a Day” Program

ATLANTA – April 30, 2018 – More than 35 attorneys and business staff in the Atlanta office of Greenberg Traurig, LLP participated in the sixth annual “Lawyer for a Day” program as mentors, instructors, or participants. Launched in 2011, the program provides Atlanta’s youth with professional mentorship opportunities and an introduction to the legal field.

“Lawyer for a Day” is a six-week law course and mock trial competition for ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students from the City of Atlanta. The sixth annual program began in December 2017, with students from Corretta Scott King and B.E.S.T. Academies and culminated with a mock trial on April 21, 2018. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Adams, DeKalb Juvenile Court Judge Johnson, and DeKalb Probate Judge Hargrove presided over the trials, with Greenberg Traurig attorneys serving as trial team mentors. Greenberg Traurig staff members served as fact witnesses and jurors.

The program was designed by Greenberg Traurig shareholders Ernest LaMont Greer and Richard J. Valladares for the 100 Black Men of Atlanta and is held in conjunction with Atlanta Public Schools, B.E.S.T. Academy. The 2018 program was led by Shareholder Janna S. Nugent, Of Counsel Joshua Portnoy, and associates Robert J. Mollohan and Andrew Z. Smith. Legal assistant Joy Tallington facilitates the program each year.

“We continue to be inspired by the talented students we work with each year, as well as the efforts all the participants put into the ‘Lawyer for a Day’ program,” said Nugent, co-chair of the Atlanta Business Litigation Practice. “Our attorneys and staff are proud of the value the firm places on these efforts, and consistently show their desire and commitment to serving our community.”

The program will continue in 2019.
