Greenberg Traurig Houston Achieves an ‘A+’ Rating for Diversity

HOUSTON – Jan. 8, 2019 – Global law firm Greenberg Traurig’s mission to welcome and promote diversity within the global law firm’s multiple offices continues to generate industry recognition.

This year, the firm’s Houston office earned an “Excellent” rating on the Houston Multi-Bar Diversity Committee’s 2018 Houston Law Firm Diversity Report Card for its racial and ethnic makeup. Greenberg Traurig was one of only two law firms to receive an “A+” rating for racial diversity.

“We are proud of the diverse group of attorneys that make Greenberg Traurig the firm that it is today,” said the firm’s co-managing shareholders of the Houston office Kent Newsome and Shari L. Heyen. “What distinguishes Greenberg Traurig from other law firms is our ability to create an environment where everyone is welcomed, differing perspectives are celebrated, and diversity within our teams is viewed as both a strength and more effective way to service our clients.” Newsome is also chair of the firm’s Texas Real Estate Practice and Heyen is a co-chair of the firm’s global Restructuring & Bankruptcy Practice.

The Houston Multi-Bar Diversity Committee was formed in June 2006 to evaluate the racial and ethnic makeup of Houston’s largest law firms. In 2017, the Committee partnered with the Coalition of Houston Diverse Bar Association – which includes Houston’s seven minority bar associations – while also adding in The Houston Association of Women Attorneys, The Korean American Bar Association of Texas, the Middle Eastern Bar Association of Texas, and the South Asian Bar Association of Houston.

For this year’s Diversity Report Card, the Committee surveyed four government legal departments in Houston, as well as 25 of the city’s largest law firms as identified by the Houston Business Journal’s 2017 rankings.

In addition to its “A+” in racial diversity, Greenberg Traurig’s Houston office earned an “A-” for its overall gender makeup. Grading is based on the percentage of minority attorneys and percentage of minority partners in each firm. To see the full 2018 Houston Law Firm Diversity Report Card, visit http://www.houstonlawyersassociation.org/law-firm-diversity-reports/.
