Greenberg Traurig Conducts 7th Annual “Lawyer for a Day” Program

ATLANTA – May 7, 2019 – More than 35 attorneys and business staff in the Atlanta office of Greenberg Traurig, LLP participated in the seventh annual “Lawyer for a Day” program as mentors, instructors, or participants. Launched in 2011, the program provides Atlanta’s youth with professional mentorship opportunities and an introduction to the legal field.

“Lawyer for a Day” is a six-week law course and mock trial competition for ninth, tenth and eleventh grade students from the City of Atlanta. The seventh annual program began in December 2018 with students from Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy and B.E.S.T. Academy and culminated with a mock trial on April 27, 2019.

Henry County State Court Judge David B. Brown, DeKalb Juvenile Court Judge Diana Johnson, and DeKalb Probate Judge Bedelia C. Hargrove presided over the trials, with GT attorneys serving as trial team mentors. GT staff members served as fact witnesses and jurors.

Greenberg Traurig shareholders Ernest LaMont Greer and Richard J. Valladares designed the program for 100 Black Men of Atlanta and it is held in conjunction with Atlanta Public Schools and B.E.S.T. Academy. Shareholder Janna S. Nugent and associate Chelsea Dease led the 2019 program. Legal assistant Joy Tallington coordinates the program each year.

“The success of the ‘Lawyer for a Day’ program demonstrates how important it is to offer mentorship and educational opportunities to Atlanta’s youth, and we are proud of the value the firm places on these efforts,” said Nugent, co-chair of the Atlanta Business Litigation Group. “Our attorneys and staff continue to be inspired by the talented students we work with each year.”

The eighth annual program will launch in December 2019.
