Greenberg Traurig Receives Latin Lawyer 2021 ‘Deal of the Year’ Award

MEXICO CITY – June 2, 2021 – Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP received the Latin Lawyer 2021 ‘Deal of Year’ award in the Private M&A category for representation of Uber. The annual awards recognize landmark Latin American deals and cases across 11 categories.

Greenberg Traurig Mexico City office attorneys represented Uber in connection with its US$459 million acquisition of the grocery delivery start-up Cornershop in Mexico and Chile, after more than a year of discourse with local regulators amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The acquisition, which faced regulatory challenges, is also distinguished by its substantial price tag for a controlling stake in a Latin American start-up. The deal led to the first merger control procedure between two digital platforms in Chile.

According to Latin Lawyer’s website, the winning deals all demonstrated innovative legal work at a level of complexity that broke new parameters in the jurisdictions where they took place. The lawyers involved performed extraordinary work, and the impact and significance of the deals go well beyond the negotiating table. Latin Lawyer’s editorial team selected the winning deals from more than 600 nominations.

The Greenberg Traurig Corporate Practice attorney team was led by Shareholder Víctor Manuel Frías Garcés, and included Shareholder Luis Cortés Panameño, and Associate Rocío Olea Salgado.

“We are excited to be recognized by Latin Lawyer for our work,” said Frías Garcés, who is also a member of the firm’s Antitrust Litigation & Competition Regulation Practice. “This transaction offered us the opportunity to continue working with talented teams at Uber and elsewhere. We are thankful for the opportunity.”
