Silicon Valley’s fastest-growing technology companies are innovators of the so-called “on-demand economy.” These companies, which include Uber, TaskRabbit (errand services), HomeJoy (home cleaning), and Instacart (personal grocery shopping), tout themselves as “digital middlemen,” tech-savvy go-betweens who match service providers with smart-phone wielding customers to provide immediate gratification at a (relatively) low price point.
