Greenberg Traurig Shareholders Chair, Speak at PLI Privacy and Data Security Institute

SAN FRANCISCO – May 2, 2017 – Francoise Gilbert and Ian C. Ballon, from the global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, will speak at the Practising Law Institute’s (PLI) 18th Annual Institute on Privacy and Data Security Law. The Institute focuses on current, critical information regarding privacy, cybersecurity, and data protection issues faced by companies. The San Francisco conference is held on May 8 - 9, at the PLI California Center at 875 Market Street.

Gilbert, a shareholder in the Silicon Valley office, has been co-chair of the PLI Privacy & Security Law Institute for the past 17 years. During this year’s Institute she will discuss recent developments in the European Union, Tuesday, May 9, 2017, from 1:15 – 2:15 p.m. She will focus on key principles of the GDPR, recent developments, guidance on the interpretation of the law published by the supervisory authorities, and will provide suggestions on the development of compliance programs. In addition, she will provide an overview of the proposed ePrivacy Regulation.

Gilbert will also moderate the panel, “The Protectors: from Compliance to Implementation,” Tuesday, May 9, 2017, from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. The panel will feature an interactive discussion among leading privacy professionals who will comment on the changes in their role as CPOs, CISOs, and CCOs, as well as budget management, communication with regulators, and the management of privacy matters in a global organization.

Ballon, co-chair of Greenberg Traurig’s Global Intellectual Property & Technology Practice and a shareholder in the Silicon Valley and Los Angeles offices, will be presenting the “Managing Privacy and Data Security Litigation” session from 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m., May 9, 2017. Ballon will address strategies and trends to successfully defend data privacy, security breach, and TCPA putative class action litigation.

Gilbert focuses her practice and research on U.S. and global data privacy and cybersecurity in a wide variety of markets, including, among others, internet, big data, connected devices, sensors, artificial intelligence, robotics, and other emerging technologies. Her clients include large, multinational entities, big data analytics companies, connected device developers, cloud service providers, publishers, internet stores, insurance companies, financial institutions, manufacturers, service providers, trade associations, non-profit organizations, software developers, and others. Gilbert is the author of the two-volume treatise “Global Privacy and Security Law,” published by Wolters Kluwer (www.globalprivacybook.com), and the co-author of a dozen other law books, including for example “Robotic Technologies Law,” published by Larcier, and “Internet of Things and Data Analytics,” published by Wiley. She has received law degrees and obtained bar admissions both in the United States and in France, and holds CIPP/US, CIPP/EU, and CIPM certifications from the International Association of Privacy Professionals.

Ballon represents technology, media, and entertainment companies in intellectual property, internet, and mobile-related complex litigation, including the defense of data privacy, security breach, and TCPA class action suits.
