  • Represented Bird Nest LLC (Katy Perry), and assisted in securing the right to acquire a former convent from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles for redevelopment into a residential compound and, in the process, defeating the claims of a competing buyer (hotel developer) and cancelling the competing buyer’s recorded deed and other clouds on title. Served as second chair during the seven-week jury trial litigating tort claims against developer-defendant for slander of title and intentional interference with contract, which resulted in two jury verdicts against defendant on all causes of action and combined awards of more than $15.5 million in compensatory and punitive damages in favor of the Bird Nest and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese. Over the course of two years leading up to trial, also assisted with extensive dispositive motion practice, discovery disputes, and petitions for writ of mandate.
  • Represented two family-owned businesses whose real property along the I-5 freeway was acquired by eminent domain by the State of California for expansion of the I-5 Corridor. In addition to assisting with pre-litigation relocation and condemnation, served as third chair during pre-trial preparations, including taking the depositions of eight employees in the right-of-way, environmental planning, and engineering departments of the California Department of Transportation. After two years of litigation, the case settled on the eve of trial, resulting in the largest goodwill payment in the history of the State of California and, in total, an eight-figure payment as just compensation for the taking.
  • Represented medical device manufacturer and subsidiaries in state and federal cases involving claims for strict products liability, negligence, manufacturing defect, wrongful death, fraud, and loss of consortium arising from use of medical devices designed, sold, labeled, and distributed by manufacturer. In January 2016 and September 2017, obtained summary judgment in favor of medical device manufacturer in two matters in California state court involving claims arising from the use of spinal implants and diabetes pumps, respectively.
  • Represented celebrity clients in an entertainment matter arising from claims for idea-theft and breach of implied contract against a foreign municipality, which eliminated the need for a public lawsuit and resulted in a seven-figure settlement before litigation was initiated.
