SILICON VALLEY, Calif. – June 8, 2016 – Ian C. Ballon, Scott J. Bornstein, and Francoise Gilbert of global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP spoke at the 13th Annual Stanford E-Commerce Best Practices Conference at Stanford Law School on June 6, 2016. According to its website, the conference is the premier educational event for in-house counsel and practitioners who work in or for internet, e-commerce, mobile, social networking, and cloud companies. Leading experts from industry, legal practice, and academia addressed current issues facing the industry and offered practical solutions for dealing with the many legal uncertainties that arise when doing business online. The program also featured a roundtable of general counsel from leading e-commerce companies.
Ballon, who is co-chair of the Greenberg Traurig’s Global Intellectual Property and Technology Practice, co-directed the program. He moderated a panel on “Cybersecurity, Terrorism, Extremist Content, and Government Surveillance“ from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m., and from 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. he co-moderated the conference’s “General Counsel Forum.” Bornstein, also co-chair of the firm’s Global Intellectual Property and Technology Practice, spoke on the “Patent Litigation Update” panel from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Gilbert, shareholder in the firm’s Cybersecurity, Privacy and Crisis Management Group, spoke on the panel “Privacy in the Era of Safe Harbor II” from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Ballon represents internet, technology, mobile, and other companies in intellectual property, privacy, and security litigation, including the defense of data privacy, security breach, behavioral advertising, and TCPA class action suits. He is also the author of the leading treatise on internet law, E-Commerce and Internet Law: Treatise with Forms 2nd edition, the 4-volume set published by West (www.IanBallon.net). In addition, he is the author of The Complete CAN-SPAM Act Handbook (West 2008) and The Complete State Security Breach Notification Compliance Handbook (West 2009). He also serves as executive director of Stanford University Law School’s Center for E-Commerce, which hosts the annual Best Practices Conference where lawyers, scholars, and judges are regularly featured and interact. Ballon has brought or defended significant and often cutting edge suits involving computer software, the internet, and mobile technology. He also chairs privacy conferences for PLI, LSI, and other organizations. He became CIPP certified in 2011 by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
Bornstein has multidisciplinary patent trial experience and has served as lead counsel in more than 100 patent litigations. He has broad experience in patent, trademark, and copyright litigation, licensing, and general IP counseling for a wide variety of national and international clients. Bornstein also has wide-ranging experience working with clients to develop thorough prosecution and enforcement strategies which support their business objectives.
Gilbert focuses her practice and research on U.S. and global data privacy and security in a wide variety of markets, including, among others, internet, cloud computing, big data, connected devices, sensors, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies.
