Greenberg Traurig Sponsors the MLRC 2018 Media Law Conference

MCLEAN, VA – September, 25, 2018 – Michael J. Grygiel and Vincent H. Chieffo, who co-chair Greenberg Traurig, LLP’s Media and Entertainment Litigation Practice, will participate in the Media Law Resource Center’s (MLRC) 2018 Media Law Conference, Sept. 26-28 in Reston, VA. The firm is a sponsor of the event.

The biennial Media Law Conference includes a mix of panels and break-out-sessions focused on the practical applications of media law and litigation. Speakers include media law attorneys, academics, journalists, and other industry leaders.

On Sept. 28, Grygiel will speak in a session titled “Libel and Privacy.” The session will focus on the impact of social media usage on public figure status under the First Amendment, and whether that status can be affected by exercise of the common law right of reply doctrine in the defamation context.

Grygiel, a shareholder in Greenberg Traurig’s Albany office, focuses his practice on media law, with an emphasis on defending news and entertainment organizations from newsgathering and publication-related claims, including defamation, copyright infringement and invasion of privacy matters. He also represents media companies and other clients in complex Lanham Act, trade secret and Internet-related litigation and counseling. As counsel of record, he has successfully defended defamation and invasion of privacy cases in state and federal courts in jurisdictions across the country, including New York, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas.

Chieffo, who is a long-time participant in the conference and a shareholder in the firm’s Los Angeles office, is an entertainment and media litigator with significant trial and appellate experience. His practice also includes entertainment transactional work. His litigation experience encompasses disputes throughout the entertainment business, including those involving copyright and trademark infringement, right of publicity, defamation, the rights of estates and heirs in copyrights and other entertainment assets, idea submission, royalties and participations, and distribution and financing agreements. Chieffo’s entertainment transaction experience has included advice regarding a wide range of matters from licensing trademarks, copyrights, and rights of publicity; sales and acquisitions of copyright and entertainment catalogues; to music publishing agreements; and motion picture production and distribution agreements.
