Houston Bar Association Bestows President’s Award to Co-Chairs of Gender Fairness Committee

GT’s Angeles Garcia Cassin recognized for service, leadership

HOUSTON – April 30, 2019 – Angeles Garcia Cassin, an associate in the Houston office of Greenberg Traurig, LLP, will receive the Houston Bar Association’s (HBA) prestigious President’s Award for Outstanding Service for her work on its Gender Fairness Committee.

Garcia Cassin and the two other co-chairs of the committee are responsible for the Gender Fairness Committee’s proactive effort urging firms to take concrete action by 2020 to materially increase the number of women as partners and firm leaders. The committee also promotes awareness within the profession and encourages law firms and corporate legal departments to sign the Gender Initiative Commitment Statement, which was strengthened by the work of the three co-chairs, according to HBA.

“The success of this Committee’s work is largely thanks to colleagues at the firm who took the time not only to encourage and support me in my role as co-chair, but also to physically participate in our programs, including Men as Mentors and Sponsors,” Garcia Cassin said.

HBA’s Gender Fairness Committee examines issues that hinder gender parity in the legal profession and develops programs for discussing such matters, including seminars and networking opportunities.

“We are proud to support the HBA and its many efforts to move the needle forward on diversity, equality, and inclusion in keeping with the firm’s own culture and history of diversity,” said Shari L. Heyen, Co-Chair of Greenberg Traurig’s Global Restructuring & Bankruptcy Practice and Co-Managing Shareholder of the firm’s Houston office. “We applaud Angeles’ commitment and dedication to her leadership role within this critical HBA committee.”

Winners of the HBA President’s Award for Outstanding Service will be recognized during the Houston Bar Association’s 2019 Annual Dinner at The Houstonian Hotel on May 16.

Garcia Cassin focuses her practice on commercial litigation and labor and employment matters. In her preventative employment practice, she advises clients and defends against claims arising under the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Older Workers Benefits Protection Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act. She also handles matters related to Title VII discrimination and retaliation as well as workers’ compensation retaliation claims.

Serving with Garcia Cassin as co-chairs of the HBA Gender Fairness Committee are Houston-based attorneys Amy Parker and W. James McAnelly III.
