Ronald Ennis is a member of the Litigation and Energy Practice in Greenberg Traurig's Houston office. He is deeply experienced in the midstream and upstream natural gas, natural gas liquids, and crude oil sectors. He has 25+ years’ experience drafting and negotiating pipeline transportation, gathering, processing, storage, and commodity purchase and sale agreements on behalf of midstream, upstream, and downstream clients. He has litigation experience both as in-house counsel managing contract and other corporate disputes, and in providing professional project management for MDL and other complex litigation matters. His deep commercial management and regulatory experience complement his ability to advise energy producers, industrial and commercial end users, and pipeline and gathering companies on a wide array of legal matters.

Experience

  • During a 4-year secondment, Ron advised Hess Corporation on the spinoff of its midstream and upstream businesses into distinct operating companies. His focus included the drafting of third party and intra-company natural gas purchase and transportation agreements for the newly created midstream businesses, including pipeline gathering and processing agreements, NAESBs, ISDAs, natural gas and crude oil sale agreements, and credit support agreements. He was also responsible for the monitoring and internal dissemination to the legal and commercial teams of changing regulations (CFTC, FERC, SEC, and E.U.) impacting the sale and trading of pipeline capacity, natural gas, NGLs, and crude oil.°
  • For 9 years, Ron served as Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of Volunteer Energy, the largest international midstream subsidiary of the Williams Companies. Volunteer was a pioneer in contracting for natural gas from small and medium-sized producers, using excess pipeline and gathering company capacity to supply large industrial end-users and LDCs in emerging deregulated energy markets in North America and the UK. Ron was responsible for drafting and negotiating the company’s natural gas purchase, sale, pipeline transportation, gathering, storage, and asset management agreements. He also managed the dispute resolution process for all company matters.°
  • Developed global supply chain partnerships for General Electric Company under Six Sigma protocols, drafting a standardized suite of natural gas and electric power purchase contracts adopted corporate-wide by Client savings exceeded $20 million per year.°
  • Led the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company business development team responsible for drafting and negotiating the energy purchase and sale agreements associated with the company’s Texas chemical plant expansion and construction of a 30 MW Cogen facility; managed the creation of the contractual and regulatory framework for the successful construction of seven gas supply pipelines in 4 states, resulting in $8.5 million annual savings to Goodyear.°
  • Designed and obtained regulatory approval of an incentive transportation tariff using traded capacity and storage, resulting in the retention of volumetric throughput representing 40% of the total pipeline system sales for a large Virginia gas distributor.°
  • Advised management in the leveraged buyout of FirstEnergy Corp’s Gulf of Mexico oil and gas marketing division.°
  • In the primary MDL case arising out of the Deepwater Horizon disaster, served as the Attorney Project Manager responsible for training 200+ contract attorneys in the legal nuts and bolts of the offshore oil and gas industry in order to conduct a review of over 40 million documents. Also acted as the e-discovery case manager on 20+ additional disputes involving governmental investigations and disputes with disaster response general contractors.°
