LOS ANGELES, CA -- April 28 2005 -- John R. Wahl, an 18-year veteran intellectual property attorney, has joined Greenberg Traurig LLP as Of Counsel in its Los Angeles office. Wahl is strongly focused on patent work, and also has extensive experience in trademark, copyright and trade secrets issues. He brings a dual perspective to his practice, having served as both in-house and outside counsel over the course of his career.

Prior to joining the firm, Wahl was a partner in the Denver office of the intellectual property boutique, Merchant & Gould. In addition to strategic counseling on intellectual property portfolio development and protection, he practiced in the areas of patent and trademark preparation and prosecution, licensing negotiation and litigation. His clients included corporations and individuals involved in a variety of technologies including medical devices, computer peripherals, software and mechanical arts.
Wahl's most recent in-house counsel position was as senior patent attorney at The Perkin-Elmer Corporation, where he was responsible for intellectual property matters primarily in its Instrument Group and Applied Biosciences division, and for managing outside counsel. Prior to that he was associate counsel at Olin Corporation, where he handled all intellectual property matters within the Olin Defense Group including the Physics International Corporation, Rocket Research Corporation and the Olin Ordnance and Winchester Divisions. Here, he gained experience in domestic and international patent prosecution in ammunition, explosives, rocketry and space propulsion technologies. His responsibilities included negotiating agreements with respect to confidentiality, technology transfer and trade secrets matters. He also provided training and counseling on intellectual property rights and certain aspects of government contracts.
In his early career, Wahl served as senior engineer at Bechtel Power Corporation where he supervised nuclear licensing and safety during nuclear power plant construction, as well as retrofitting of existing commercial power plants following the Three-Mile Island incident.
Wahl has a J.D. from Detroit College of Law and a B.S.E. in both nuclear engineering and environmental science engineering from the University of Michigan. He also attended the Navy Electronics, Submarine and Nuclear Power Schools.
