Greenberg Traurig Attorneys Present at the 2019 Council on State Taxation Property Tax Workshop

LAS VEGAS – Sept. 23, 2019 –Shareholders C. Stephen Davis, Glenn Newman, and Cris K. O’Neall of global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP’s Tax Practice will participate in the Council on State Taxation (COST) Property Tax Workshop, held in cooperation with the International Property Tax Institute, Sept. 30 to Oct. 3 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The workshop will cover the latest property tax issues and trends for both industry and practitioners.

Davis will speak on the panel, “Recent Developments That Will Help You Exclude Intangible Assets from Assessments,” on Oct. 1. The panelists will provide guidance on how to make sure your intangibles are removed from assessments.

Newman will speak on two panels.  The first, "Show Time! Mock Property Tax Dispute Resolution – Tony Awards Pending,” is on Oct. 1. The panelists will address issues that need to be considered including expansion of a business operation into a state and dealing with legislators and tax officials.  During the second panel, “Ask the Experts – Practitioners Addressing Issues for Free,” on Oct. 2, panelists will answer audience questions regarding property tax issues.

O’Neall will speak on the panel, "California – A Property Tax Nation unto Itself,” on Oct. 1. The panelists will address various California property tax topics, including Prop 13 and dealing with split rolls. Also, as California continues to focus on property taxes, they will discuss whether businesses should be subject to the tax in a different manner than residential property owners.

Davis focuses his practice on property tax counseling and controversies in the real estate, energy, oil, hospitality and healthcare industries. He litigates property tax controversies before local assessment appeals boards, superior courts, courts of appeal, and the California Supreme Court. His practice also includes participating in rule-making and other proceedings before the California State Board of Equalization.

Newman focuses his practice on tax planning and controversy matters involving state and local taxes including personal income tax, corporate tax, sales tax and real property transfer taxes. Throughout his career, Newman has held numerous positions within the New York City and State government. Most recently, he was confirmed by the City Council to serve as President of the New York City Tax Commission. He also previously served as the Deputy Commissioner for Audit and Enforcement at the New York City Department of Finance where he was responsible for developing tax policy and for all aspects of the audit process.

O’Neall focuses his practice on ad valorem property tax and assessment counseling and litigation (appeal hearings and trials). For over 25 years, he has represented a variety of California taxpayers in equalization proceedings before county assessment appeals boards, the State Board of Equalization, the Superior Court, the California Court of Appeal, and the California Supreme Court.

In addition to Davis, Newman, and O’Neall, Shareholder Bradley R. Marsh, co-chair of the State and Local Tax (SALT) Practice, will also attend the COST Property Tax Workshop.
