Greenberg Traurig’s Magan Pritam Ray Elected as Chair of ACLU Northern California

SILICON VALLEY – Dec. 02, 2016 – Magan Pritam Ray, a shareholder at international law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, was elected to serve as chair of American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Northern California, commencing January 1, 2017. ACLU Northern California is the largest ACLU affiliate in terms of members, which is about 50,000, and in terms of finances and fundraising, according to its website.

Ray originally commenced service on the ACLU-NC Board in 2009 and served two consecutive 3-year terms. Prior to that she served on the Mid-Peninsula Chapter Board. Ray returned to the Affiliate Board in 2016 and currently is a member of the Development Committee. Previously she was a member of the Executive Committee, Chaired the Legislative Policy Committee, Chaired the Officer Nominating Committee, served as the Affirmative Action Officer, and was as a member of the Finance Committee, Investment Committee, and Personnel Committee.

Ray is originally from Punjab, India and immigrated to the United States with her parents and three sisters in the late 1960s. As the mother of three adult children, she is particularly interested in privacy, free speech, criminal justice reform, and educating young people about civil liberties and the foundational role they play in a democratic society.

Ray, a shareholder in Global Benefits & Compensation Practice of the Silicon Valley office, has wide-ranging experience in all facets of employee benefits and ERISA matters, including the design, implementation and operation of retirement plans, health and welfare benefit plans, cafeteria plans, fringe benefit plans, and non-qualified deferred compensation programs.

According to its website, founded almost 100 years ago, the ACLU works “to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States.”  The organization has more than 500,000 members, approximately 200 staff attorneys, and thousands of volunteer attorneys and offices across the United States.
