TAMPA – April 25, 2019 – Gregory W. Kehoe a shareholder in the Tampa office of global law firm Greenberg Traurig, P.A., co-chaired the 2019 International Bar Association’s (IBA) Annual Conference on Criminal Law: The Next Big Questions for International Criminal Justice, held on April 13 at The Peace Palace of The Hague in the Netherlands.
The IBA, considered the world’s leading organization of international legal practitioners, bar associations, law firms, and law societies, influences the development of international law reform and shapes the future of the legal profession throughout the world. It has a membership of more than 80,000 individual lawyers and more than 190 bar associations and law societies spanning over 170 countries.
Kehoe, a former U.S. Department of Justice prosecutor who is a member of Greenberg Traurig’s Litigation Practice Group and White Collar Defense & Special Investigations Practice Group, was also the conference’s session chair for the discussion titled "Corporate accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide: what gives?" Panelists included Anne Bodley of HSBC, New York; Pieter Borms Van der Straten, Antwerp; Emma Irving Assistant Professor of Public International Law, Leiden Law School, The Hague; Judge Guénaël Mettraux Kosovo Specialist Chambers, The Hague; and Sheryn Omeri, Cloisters Chambers, London.
“It was important to discuss many of the issues involved in whether corporations can be held accountable for their acts or omissions under international criminal justice,” said Kehoe, who has been co-chair of the IBA’s War Crimes Committee since 2017 and vice-chair for 2015-2016. “Considering current issues involving violence and environmental disasters that might amount to crimes against humanity, it is a very relevant question to be asking at this moment in time.”
With more than 30 years of trial experience, Kehoe has a national and international practice focusing on representation of individuals, corporations and financial institutions. This includes representation before federal and state courts as well as international tribunals. He represented General Ante Gotovina in his complete acquittal before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and also represented General Mohammed Hussein Ali before the International Criminal Court, which also led to a full dismissal on all charges.
In addition, Kehoe worked for the U.S. Department of Justice as a prosecutor for over 20 years with postings in the United States, Europe, Asia and South America. While serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, he was responsible for prosecuting a number of high-profile cases involving financial institutions and corporate fraud allegations, as well as racketeering charges.
