Ian Ballon and Francoise Gilbert Speak at Rocky Mountain Intellectual Property & Technology Law Institute Conference

SILICON VALLEY – May 28, 2019 – Ian C. Ballon and Francoise Gilbert, shareholders at global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, will speak at the 17th annual Rocky Mountain Intellectual Property & Technology Law Institute conference, held in Westminster, Colorado, May 30-31.

The conference brings together seasoned thought leaders to discuss important practice-area developments in patent law, copyright and trademark law, e-commerce, and licensing. The event is co-sponsored by Stanford Law School; Stanford Program in Law, Science and Technology; the Intellectual Property Law Section of the Colorado Bar Association; and the Copyright Society of the USA.

Ballon, co-chair of Greenberg Traurig’s Global Intellectual Property & Technology Practice and an intellectual property and data privacy/cybersecurity litigation shareholder based in the firm’s Silicon Valley and Los Angeles offices, will present the “Internet Update,” a year-in-review presentation on internet and mobile law and litigation trends.

Gilbert, co-chair of Greenberg Traurig’s Data, Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice, will present a session titled “Developing and Distributing IoT Products.” The session will explore the latest privacy and security developments concerning IoT Products; U.S. laws regulating IoT products; the effect of GDPR and other foreign laws; and enforcement actions and litigation.

Ballon defends platforms and other internet and mobile companies in cutting edge copyright, trademark, right of publicity, trade secret, AI, database protection/ screen scraping, DMCA, and CDA litigation, as well as defending companies in data privacy and cybersecurity class action suits. He is also the author of the leading treatise on internet law, E-Commerce and Internet Law: Treatise with Forms 2nd edition, the 5-volume set published by West (www.IanBallon.net), which includes 2 entire volumes on intellectual property laws and almost an entire full volume on data privacy, email and text marketing, cybersecurity, and defending class action suits. In addition, he is the author of The Complete CAN-SPAM Act Handbook (West 2008) and The Complete State Security Breach Notification Compliance Handbook (West 2009). Ballon serves as executive director of Stanford University Law School’s Center for E-Commerce, which hosts the annual Digital Economy Best Practices Conference. He has been included on the Daily Journal’s list for “Top Intellectual Property Lawyers” in every year that the list has been published, from 2009 to 2019, and is included in its 2019 “Top Cyber Lawyers” and 2018 list for “Top AI and Cyber Lawyers.” He also has been recognized as a “Groundbreaker” in The Recorder’s 2017 Litigation Departments of the Year Awards and an intellectual property “Trailblazer” by the National Law Journal. He was named the “Lawyer of the Year” for Technology Law in the 2019 and 2018 editions of The Best Lawyers in America, and for Information Technology Law in the 2016 and 2013 editions. Gilbert focuses her practice and research on advanced U.S. and global data privacy and security matters. Some of her favorite engagements include designing data protection programs that meet the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), shaping digital advertising campaigns, integrating privacy and security controls in data analytics and artificial intelligence projects, identifying and addressing personal data issues likely to arise from the use of products or services used in digital cities, connected devices, intelligent vehicles, and other emerging technologies. Gilbert is the author and editor of the leading two-volume treatise Global Privacy and Security Law, published by Wolters Kluwer (www.globalprivacybook.com), which analyzes in depth the privacy and data protection laws of 68 countries on all continents (Wolters Kluwer 2009-2019). She is also a co-author of “Internet of Things and Data Analytics Handbook” (Wiley, 2017). She has received law degrees and obtained bar admissions both in the United States and in France, and holds CIPP/US, CIPP/EU, and CIPM certifications from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
