Greenberg Traurig’s Keith J. Shapiro Presented with Lifetime Achievement Award from Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

CHICAGO – April 6, 2017 –Keith J. Shapiro, Co-Chairman of the Chicago office at global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP and Co-Chair of the firm’s Restructuring & Bankruptcy Practice, received Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal’s Distinguished Service Award for Lifetime Achievement on Monday, April 3rd at the Journal’s 2017 Banquet in Atlanta.

The Distinguished Service award is presented annually to a member of the bankruptcy field who has made significant contributions to the legal community and practice. Prior award recipients include The Honorable William L. Norton, Jr.; Kenneth N. Klee; Harvey R. Miller; The Honorable David H. Coar; The Honorable Conrad B. Duberstein; Senator Dennis W. DeConcini; Professor Douglas G. Baird; Senator Elizabeth Warren; Barry W. Ridings; Tony Alvarez II and Bryan Marsal; and Richard Levin.

A 1983 graduate of Emory Law School, Shapiro was a member of the inaugural Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal and has contributed to shaping academic discourse at the Law School. In addition to his decades of service as the Journal’s Alumni Advisor, he has served on the Emory Law School Advisory Board since 2008. Hoping to inspire law students to pursue careers in bankruptcy law, he founded the Journal’s Keith J. Shapiro Awards for Excellence in Consumer and Corporate Bankruptcy Writing in 1999 and funded an endowment last year to ensure the awards’ permanence.

Shapiro has appeared worldwide in corporate bankruptcy matters and workouts, representing troubled companies, financial institutions, creditors' committees, hedge funds, and private equity funds. Throughout his career, he has played central roles in the bankruptcies and restructurings of many notable businesses, including United Airlines; Conseco Finance Corp.; Tropicana Entertainment, LLC; Kmart Corporation; ICO Global Communications; and Montgomery Ward, among others.

Shapiro has held numerous leadership positions with the American Bankruptcy Institute, serving as ABI president from 2000–2001 and as Chairman of the Board from 2002–2003. He has been a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy since 2000, has served as General Counsel to the Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Advisors for over 20 years, and is a past International Board member of Insol International and the Turnaround Management Association.
