Big Brothers Big Sisters was in big trouble.
An audit by the Justice Department Inspector General in 2013 found that the non-profit corporation failed to properly account for $19 million in grants. The government froze its funding, the Philadelphia U.S. Attorney’s office began digging into false claims charges, and the charity for at-risk youth faced potential ruin.
That’s when Greenberg Traurig partner David Weinstein got the call. The managing partner of the firm’s Tampa office and chair of the environmental and toxic torts litigation practice, Weinstein knew the organization’s newly installed president Pam Iorio, the former mayor of Tampa. The accounting mishap didn’t occur on Iorio’s watch, but it was her job to clean it up. She turned to Weinstein for help—pro bono.
Last week, after more than 2,000 hours of work by 21 lawyers in 10 offices, Greenberg brokered a $1.6 million settlement with the government.
