MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Oct. 5, 2016 – The class action group of the New Jersey office of global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP was recently selected by the New Jersey Law Journal as the “Litigation Department of the Year – Class Action,” and will be honored Nov. 16, 2016, at The Newark Club in Newark, New Jersey.
According to the publication, the group’s lawyers “demonstrated why clients choose them when disputes arise. The key, though, was that [the work] was done primarily by New Jersey lawyers, showcasing the talented litigators the Garden State is fortunate enough to claim as its own.”
“We would like to thank our clients who trust us to address their most complex litigation needs, in New Jersey and beyond,” said Philip R. Sellinger, co-chair of the firm’s Global Litigation Practice and co-managing shareholder of the New Jersey office. “I am extremely proud of the scope of our team and how well we utilize the resources of our global practice of more than 600 litigators, adding value to every step of the client relationship. We do this not because we are big, but because we focus on excellence and are nimble, zeroing in on key issues for our clients early on.”
“This award reflects the fact that clients have come to rely on our ability to draw from our deep bench of practitioners to handle complicated cases across a wide spectrum of practice areas and industries,” said Geoffrey S. Berman, co-managing shareholder of Greenberg Traurig’s New Jersey office. “We are very pleased and honored.”
Additionally, New Jersey Labor & Employment Shareholder Kristine J. Feher has been recognized by the New Jersey Law Journal as one of the 2016 Top Women in Law. The publication highlighted 25 women attorneys across New Jersey who have had notable achievements in recent years or who have made an extraordinary impact on the legal profession. The honorees will attend a celebratory dinner at the Manhattan Penthouse in New York City Nov. 15.
The Litigation Practice is the largest practice group in the firm’s New Jersey office. Over half of the office’s approximately 74 attorneys are litigators, a significant portion of whom specialize in class action defense and are called upon to defend class actions in New Jersey and throughout the country in matters of significant importance to clients.
Greenberg Traurig’s New Jersey class action litigators had an outstanding year in 2015, with exemplary results in courts throughout the country, including: significant appellate victories before the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (affirming the trial court’s dismissal of a class action seeking over $10 billion in damages); obtaining the dismissal of claims involving hundreds of millions of dollars in United States District Courts in New Jersey and throughout the country and in New Jersey state courts, in many instances establishing favorable precedent in developing areas of law; and representing the interests of pro bono clients, including the procurement of political asylum for a victim of torture from the Sudan and obtaining Special Immigrant Juvenile Status for unaccompanied minors fleeing abuses in their native Central America, ensuring that they will not be returned to the dangers posed in their countries of origin. Greenberg Traurig’s New Jersey class action litigators continue to be the “go to” lawyers for clients who are facing significant class actions that pose business and legal challenges. For example, they are currently representing one of the world’s largest timeshare companies in a putative class action that involves timeshare resorts in 44 cities in 11 states involving several hundred thousand potential class members. The department is also serving as lead counsel for a major national retailer in connection with approximately 15 putative class actions alleging that it advertised parmesan cheese as “100% Grated Parmesan Cheese,” when it actually contains 7 to 10 percent cellulose, a filler and anti-clumping material made from wood pulp.
