Good in Practice, Greenberg Traurig, LLP’s podcast focused on pro bono, released part one of its two-part series titled “Obtaining Benefits for Veterans who are Survivors of Sexual Assault During Service.” Good in Practice is hosted by Shareholder Caroline J. Heller, chair of the global law firm’s Global Pro Bono Program and commercial litigator in the New York office.
In this episode, Heller talks to Samantha Kubek, a former Equal Justice Works (EJW) fellow co-sponsored by GT and Greystone & Co., Inc., and current visiting assistant clinical professor and director of Robert W. Entenmann Veterans Law Clinic at Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. Kubek discusses her work as an EJW Fellow at the New York Legal Assistance Group, and then as a staff attorney, establishing legal clinics in New York for women veterans who are survivors of sexual assaults during their military service. She discusses the importance of relating to and establishing trust with her veteran clients, and the extraordinary effect an award of benefits can have to a veteran and their family.
