John has over thirty years of experience as a patent strategist, counselor and litigator.  He focuses his practice primarily on developing patent portfolios, with an emphasis in the field of AI. He has managed and assisted in developing the patent portfolios for some of the most innovative companies in the software, telecommunications and computer industries. These include Intel, Google, Apple, Yahoo, AT&T, Visa, Micron Technologies, Deem, Xobni, LookOut, Magellan Navigation, Oracle, Alcatel, Cadence and Looksmart.

  • Intergraph Corp. v. Intel Corp. Acted as assistant counsel for Intel in patent infringement matter involving patents related to microprocessor and related computer technologies.
  • Micron Technologies v. Motorola. Acted as counsel for Micron Technologies in patent infringement matter involving more than 12 patents related to semiconductor and wireless communications.
  • Ingenio v. Acacia. Acted as counsel for plaintiff in declaratory judgment action in matter brought against Acacia relating to business method patent. Acacia specializes in acquiring and enforcing patents.
  • Keen, Inc. v. Inforocket. Served as assistant counsel and expert witness of noninfringement.
  • Mobile Traffic Systems v. Magellan Navigation, Inc. Counseled defendant Magellan Navigation in matter brought by Mobile Traffic Systems relating to traffic updates from the Internet. Mobile Traffic Systems is company of Acacia Technologies, which specializes in acquiring and enforcing patents.
  • PNI v. Magellan Navigation, Inc. Acted as counsel for defendant Magellan Navigation in patent infringement matter related to compass and navigation technologies.
  • Diasonics Ultrasound v. Acuson. Acted as counsel for plaintiff Diasonics in patent infringement declaratory judgment matter relating to phased array ultrasound imagers for medical devices, and three-dimensional medical imaging.
  • Supported the development of the patent portfolio for the Intel family of processors from Intel Pentium through the Centrino processor, along with the Intel MMX portfolio.
