Steven M. Harkins

Steve Harkins practices products liability litigation, with a focus on pharmaceuticals and multidistrict litigation (“MDL”). He works on products liability matters in both state and federal courts ranging from single plaintiff claims to nationwide consumer class action cases. Steve is involved in defending manufacturers of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, industrial chemicals, and consumer products.

Steve has taken and defended numerous depositions ranging from parties and fact witnesses to opposing experts. He has taken fact witness depositions in products liability cases involving single plaintiff medical device incidents as well as pharmaceutical MDLs. He has taken lead on briefing of numerous aspects of the valsartan MDL and serves as lead on several co-defendant subcommittees within that litigation. He has assisted with briefing to and preparation for appearances before the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation.

Steve previously represented physicians, hospitals, and other health care professionals in medical malpractice claims, and represented property owners in general liability matters. In that capacity he secured multiple dismissals with prejudice on behalf of his clients and handled briefing in the successful appeal of a $22 million medical malpractice verdict before the Georgia Supreme Court.



  • Represents pharmaceutical manufacturer in defending multidistrict litigation based on the largest Class 1 drug recall in U.S. history.
  • Assists in defense of pharmaceutical manufacturer in multidistrict litigation and coordinated state-court actions involving a chemotherapy medication.
  • Represents pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturer in defense of product liability litigation involving surgical contrast agent.
  • Defends medical device manufacturer in product liability litigation involving ophthalmic surgical instrument.
  • Counsels pharmaceutical products manufacturers in relation to regulatory compliance, risk management, and recall handling.
  • Represents chemical company in litigation alleging contamination of municipal water supply.
  • Handled briefing in successful appeal of $22 million medical malpractice jury verdict.°
  • Represented physicians, medical providers, and hospitals in wrongful death medical malpractice claims.°
  • Represented lawyers, contractors, architects, physicians, and other professionals in professional malpractice and ethics matters in state court and before regulatory and disciplinary bodies.°
