Holly Skolnick Fellowship Foundation

The Holly Skolnick Fellowship Foundation is Greenberg Traurig’s primary initiative to support public interest pro bono work. Through the foundation, GT serves as the primary sponsor of U.S.-based fellowships coordinated by Equal Justice Works, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing opportunities for law students and lawyers to deliver effective legal representation to underserved communities and causes.

Our lawyers help interview applicants who, once selected for the program, are placed in nonprofit community organizations for two-year fellowships. Throughout that time, GT lawyers have provided fellows with legal research and writing, translation services, and opportunities to present their cases at GT offices around the country. When we have the opportunity, the firm collaborates with clients (including Clorox and UPS) and nonprofit organizations to fund the fellows’ work. Together, the sponsors, fellows, and host organizations seek to provide equal access to the justice system for society’s most vulnerable populations.

Since 1999, GT has invested more than $18 million to support, in whole or in part, 225 fellows who*:

  • Have provided more than 850,000 attorney hours
  • Delivered legal services at more than 145 host organizations
  • Served in over 65 cities across the U.S.
  • Worked in more than 30 issue areas
  • Graduated from 70 law schools

The foundation is named after Holly Skolnick, who served as chair of the firm’s Pro Bono Initiative and president/founder of the Greenberg Traurig Fellowship Foundation. Following her death in 2013 from melanoma, the firm renamed the fellowship in her memory.

An experienced trial attorney and litigator for over 25 years, Holly represented individuals and entities in complex civil, criminal, and regulatory matters. Her practice areas included securities fraud, class action defense, insider trading, money laundering, and RICO.

Holly’s passion for justice was evident from the start of her legal career, when she served as a public defender in Washington, D.C. Even after going into private practice, she made a point to dedicate time to pro bono cases and encouraging others to do the same. That passion led to the establishment of the Greenberg Traurig Fellowship Foundation.

Holly’s view on the importance of giving back to the community was best summarized in her own words: “In our current economic climate, lawyers cannot neglect their duty to their communities. The private sector must partner with social service organizations, engage its attorneys and staff, and work together to make a difference for those who cannot afford legal services.”
