Career Development

Greenberg Traurig Invests in You!

Greenberg Traurig provides a variety of learning and professional development programs to build legal knowledge, strengthen professional skills, and empower our attorneys to make strategic business decisions that work for them. Our development programs enhance the skills and competencies our attorneys need at each step of their career, while supporting attorneys so they can thrive in their work, in their client relationships, and as part of our community. We focus on two critical components of development: (1) growth and advancement around a set of core competencies and (2) cultural freedom to leverage unique talents.

The Hoffman Center for Professional Development

Named for Larry Hoffman, one of GT's founding partners and its chairman since 1997, the Hoffman Center for Professional Development (the Center) is the hub of the firm's professional development training. Using live and multimedia platforms, the Center offers scheduled and on-demand legal, business, and client-related programs to support and guide associates in both their day-to-day and aspirational career development. The Center strives to offer a beneficial and rewarding professional experience for every attorney and professional staff through comprehensive training, mentoring, and career guidance.

"I believe that professional development is so important to our firm... It is the single most important factor that can distinguish our firm within our profession and in our society."

—Larry Hoffman

Competency Model

Developing our attorneys’ skills is a cornerstone the firm’s success. We have identified the skills, behaviors, and characteristics needed for success – what we call “core competencies.” These core competencies provide a roadmap and benchmarks for attorney development. Our competency model focuses on Fundamentals, along with Giving Back/Pro Bono, Innovation Tools, and Business Development. We also provide firmwide and practice-specific core competencies for different levels and have tools to help measure and track our attorneys’ skills and development as they relate to the competencies.

We want our attorneys to excel in their core legal skills, while also learning how to develop close relationships with clients, become leaders in the community, and keep our firm a great place to work.

Associate Development Program

Greenberg Traurig’s Associate Development Program includes three integrated components: career development liaisons, who are local shareholders charged with overseeing the program in each office; a shareholder mentor, an associate-nominated shareholder responsible for helping that associate develop self-awareness and obtain feedback and ideas for growth; and the associate eNotebook, a user-friendly platform that helps associates navigate the breadth of professional development and mentoring resources available. The eNotebook hosts a library of important associate development assessment tools and will help assess abilities and goals related to core competencies, business development plans, client development tools, and the attorney review season generally.

Training and Workshops

Greenberg Traurig is committed to providing our attorneys—whether recent law school graduates or experienced practitioners—with relevant and “sticky” training programs to help them perform at their best. The Center offers substantive law and skills-based programming relevant to an attorney’s practice and level. The Center also offers regular training programs and workshops for local offices and practices, covering substantive topics as well as nonsubstantive skills, like business development. These are facilitated by other firm attorneys, outside presenters, and the Professional Development team.

Our tailored, practical, hands-on programs for the ongoing development of our attorneys is ongoing through workshops and multiday academies. Some of the specific programs include:

  • Business Development framework and curriculum
  • Legal Writing Academy
  • Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Programs
  • Litigation Skills Academy
  • Innovation and Technology Curricula and Coaching
  • Well-being Programs and Wellness Resources

Continuing Legal Education

GT offers live continuing legal education programming (CLE) as well as a robust online library of on-demand CLE programming for attorneys and clients of the firm. The Professional Development team utilizes an online tracking system to assist in timely completion of periodic renewal processes and CLE requirements.
