MIAMI – May 4, 2022 – Greenberg Traurig, P.A. Senior Chairman Matthew B. Gorson received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami at the organization’s recent annual gala, “The Art of the Match,” at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami aims to make Miami a safe haven where children can grow and thrive. The chapter is part of the larger Big Brothers Big Sisters of America organization, the nation’s largest donor- and volunteer-supported mentoring network. The non-profit organization creates and supports one-to-one mentoring relationships between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 5 through young adulthood in communities across the country.
The award given last month, recognized Gorson’s decade-long service to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, including serving as a board member since 2012 and two terms as board chair. He paved the way for Greenberg Traurig to become the first local law firm to take on the role as a corporate “School to Work’’ mentoring partner – recruiting employees at the firm’s Miami-area offices to mentor Miami-Dade high school students. His family graciously donated the funds to create the Gorson Family Executive Wing at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami’s headquarters, the Carnival Center for Excellence.
Gorson has witnessed the positive impact of mentoring firsthand through his role as a Big in the School to Work program and his son’s role as a Big in the community. Additionally, Gorson is the co-sponsor and co-founder of the annual Halloween “Scaring for Caring” haunted house, supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, UHealth Jackson Children’s Care, and Holtz Children’s Hospital.
“Supporting the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami is very important to me personally, as well as to the firm, because we are helping to ensure these children and teens have positive role models they can look to for guidance as they move through school and prepare for their future,” Gorson said. “I am honored to be a part of an organization that’s focused on changing the lives of young people, and I look forward to maintaining my commitment to Big Brothers Big Sisters for years to come.”
Said Gale Nelson, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami: “Matt Gorson epitomizes the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami: igniting the power and promise of our youth through mentoring. He is so deserving of this Lifetime Achievement Award because of his continued service, dedication and thought leadership on our Board of Directors, his personal time mentoring youth as a ‘Big,’ and his sincere concern for our community. We are grateful to have him in our family.”
Based in Greenberg Traurig’s Miami office, Gorson oversees the day-to-day operations of the firm’s Southeast and California offices and previously served as the firm’s president and chairman. Gorson joined Greenberg Traurig in 1973 as the firm’s 14th lawyer and became one of the most prolific and in-demand real estate attorneys in South Florida. His work over the last five decades has played a key role in revitalizing the urban landscape and changing the skyline of Downtown Miami, Brickell Avenue, Miami Beach and Sunny Isles. As the former chair of the firm's national Real Estate Practice, Gorson was instrumental in developing the firm's reputation as a real estate powerhouse.
