Kunyong Yang builds and manages global patent portfolios for pharmaceutical, chemical, and biotechnology innovations, including small molecule drugs, lipid nanoparticles, antibody drug conjugates, radiopharmaceuticals, and chemically modified peptides and oligonucleotides such as siRNA and mRNA. He works with pharmaceutical and life sciences companies, from emerging biotech startups, to clinical stage drug developers, to multinational pharmaceutical corporations, guiding them from initial portfolio development through product development and into late-stage life cycle management and regulatory extension strategy. A former medicinal chemist at a multinational corporation, Kunyong brings a working knowledge of drug discovery science to patent strategy, with graduate training in organic chemistry supporting his work on complex chemical and biologic subject matter.
Kunyong also counsels clients on intellectual property due diligence, including patentability, validity, and freedom to operate analysis, in connection with investments, acquisitions, licensing arrangements, and research collaborations. That work often supports transactions and partnerships involving cutting edge technology in biotech and pharmaceutical industries, where the value of the deal depends on the strength and scope of the underlying intellectual property.
His practice includes contested proceedings as well. Kunyong has experience in Hatch-Waxman litigation and post-grant proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including inter partes review and post-grant review, giving clients a single point of contact for portfolio building and patent challenge. Based in San Diego, he is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and speaks Mandarin Chinese, which supports his work with clients and innovators in China..
