GT Shareholder Jim DeCarlo participated in the IP Counsel Café’s Annual Silicon Valley Meeting, held May 18-19, 2022 at the Crowne Plaza Palo Alto. The event featured two days of panel discussions and networking with senior IP counsel at today’s leading companies. Jim was moderator for a panel entitled, “Strategically Navigating the Business World While Wearing the Legal Hat,” on May 19 at 9:45 AM PDT.
The panel discussed:
- How do you obtain the pure business knowledge needed to understand the full context of the legal challenge you are being asked to advise on?
- Do you keep your advice at a purely “legal” level, or do you also give what some might consider purely business advice? If so, is that welcomed by the businesspeople?
- What do want to see from your outside counsel with respect to business advice?
- How does the issue of privilege influence how you deliver your advice, and do you ever tailor your advice with privilege in mind?
