Shail P. Shah, Martye Kendrick & Andrew P. Rubin to Speak at ABA 2024 Midyear Tax Meeting

SAN FRANCISCO – Jan. 15, 2023 – Greenberg Traurig, LLP Tax Practice Shareholder Shail P. Shah and Of Counsels Martye Kendrick and Andrew P. Rubin will speak at the American Bar Association (ABA) 2024 Midyear Tax Meeting in San Francisco Jan. 19.

Shah will speak on a panel titled “California SALT Experts vs ChatGPT.” During this panel, local and California state tax professionals will battle ChatGPT in a Q&A session to evaluate and analyze the program’s responses to State and Local Tax (SALT)-related issues. 

Kendrick is set to participate in a panel titled “Spending Exceptions to the Arbitrage

Rebate Rule,” which will discuss available spending exceptions and how to discuss and deal with them for clients. Rubin will also participate in a panel titled “Unrelated Trade or Business Activities of 501(c)(3) Borrowers,” which will discuss the different factors associated with unrelated trade or business (Section 513) activities resulting in private business use. Both panels are a part of the ABA tax-exempt financing committee.

Shah has been helping clients address California tax problems for more than 15 years. His clients range from Fortune 25 companies to high-net-worth individuals. Shah focuses his practice on complex California tax planning and representation in front of the California Franchise Tax Board, California Department of Taxation and Fee Administration, Office of Tax Appeals, Board of Equalization, and various administrative and judicial adjudicating forums at both the state and local levels. He provides advice on both proactive residency planning and residency audit defense.

Kendrick is a highly accomplished attorney, with deep experience in handling matters relating to tax-exempt bond financings, commercial real estate transactions, structured finance, and tax. She takes a collaborative and consultive approach with her clients and helps them to make sound decisions to drive their business forward. As a strategic advisor, she cultivates and nurtures relationships with clients, peers, and partners in both the public and private sectors.

Rubin is a community development and infrastructure finance tax attorney. His practice is focused on helping nonprofits and state, local, and tribal governments finance development and redevelopment projects that support local communities. Rubin is a leader in Greenberg Traurig’s tax-exempt organizations practice, serving as a trusted adviser to nonprofits for tax, financing, corporate governance, and transactional matters.
