Greenberg Traurig’s Steven M. Malina and Jena M. Valdetero to Present ‘Cybersecurity and the SEC’ Webinar

CHICAGO – May 5, 2022Steven M. Malina and Jena M. Valdetero, shareholders in the Chicago office of global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, will present the Celesq AttorneysEdCenter CLE webinar “Cybersecurity and the SEC: Updates on Proposed Rule-Making and Enforcement Actions” May 10 at 3 p.m. EDT.

The webinar will discuss the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)’s 2021 announcement prioritizing cybersecurity and the increase in security breaches following the shift to remote work due to COVID-19. The SEC has since issued proposed rulemaking for cybersecurity disclosures, including a 48-hour regulatory breach notification requirement, for broker-dealers and registered investment advisors.

Recently, the SEC issued proposed rules for public companies, including a rule requiring disclosure of significant cybersecurity incidents within four days. The rules follow an increase in enforcement actions against companies deemed to have inadequate cybersecurity practices, breach reporting, and recordkeeping.

Malina, a former Senior Attorney in the SEC’s enforcement branch, focuses his practice on a variety of litigation and regulatory matters with representations of financial services industry clients, hedge fund matters, and securities and general commercial litigation. He represents officers, directors, broker-dealers, investment advisors, commercial banks, investment banks, investment management firms, and public issuers in investigations and disciplinary proceedings initiated by the SEC, Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, New York Stock Exchange, Chicago Board Options Exchange, Chicago Mercantile Exchange, and state regulators.

Valdetero, co-chair of the U.S. Data, Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice, advises clients on complex data privacy and security issues. She defends companies against privacy and data breach litigation, with an emphasis on class action lawsuits, and has led more than 1,000 data breach investigations. Valdetero has designed and conducted dozens of data breach tabletop exercises to empower clients to respond effectively to a data security incident. She also counsels companies on data privacy and security compliance programs and advises on cyber risks associated with mergers and transactions.
