Erick Hernández Gallego Appointed Co-chair of ICC Global Working Group on Circular Economy

MEXICO CITYSept. 23, 2022 – Greenberg Traurig Shareholder Erick Hernández Gallego, head of the Environmental Practice and co-chair of the Energy & Natural Resources Practice in the firm’s Mexico City office, was appointed co-chair of the International Chambers of Commerce (ICC) Global Working Group on Circular Economy. Hernández Gallego also is a member of the firm’s robust Latin America Practice.

Hernández Gallego represents domestic and international clients on environmental and energy matters, including corporate finance, health care, regulatory compliance, and real estate matters. Hernández Gallego has represented clients in several project finance, mergers and acquisitions and electric energy tenders, as well as hydrocarbons tender procedures, both in accordance to the new energy reform in Mexico.

In addition, he has over 20 years of experience in environmental and sustainability law. He advises Mexican and International entities and their holding companies on projects related to renewables, environmental impact and risk matters, financing of green projects, soil contamination, as well as emissions reductions and climate change. Over the last year, Hernández Gallego has led client representations regarding Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) , Circular Economy and air emission matters, in addition to the more “traditional” environmental law topics.

During his professional experience, he has participated infrastructure, oil and gas, and energy projects, as well as assessing different companies in all regulatory matters, including health care, environmental, health and safety. In the environmental field, he has participated in the preparation of a legal report for the World Bank and the Ministry of Energy for the possible implementation of carbon capture use and storage in Mexico and assists on environmental matters for the implementation of Clean Development Mechanisms in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol in Mexico and Latin America.

In 2021, Hernández Gallego was selected by the ICC Mexico to represent them at the United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP26) in Glasgow, participating in the Blue Zone – where key negotiations between world leaders take place and accreditation is needed to get in – in light of his active work in the area of climate change, circular economy, air emissions, ESG criteria, and renewable energy. He also participated as an expert on environmental and sustainability at the 17th UN Climate Change Conference (CoP17). Hernández Gallego was a speaker and had an active participation at events hosted by the ICC Mexico Environment Committee, International Bar Association, American Bar Association, Abogadas MX (ESG session), the UN COP26 Summit, and Greenberg Traurig-hosted webinars, among others, and frequently writes on Environmental Law topics. Hernández Gallego is currently very active in several groups of the Mexican chapter of the ICC, such as environment and natural resources, circular economy, plastics pollution.
