Greenberg Traurig hosted an interactive and engaging webinar panel discussion of the new age of economic sanctions post-Russian invasion of Ukraine. The current sanctions landscape includes unprecedented, multilateral imposition of restrictions (including by historically neutral nations such as Switzerland) targeting various sectors of the Russian and Belarusian economies. Apart from newly coordinated implementation of economic sanctions, corporates and individuals around the world now face novel, multinational enforcement initiatives targeting sanctions violations and evasion.
GT panelists explored and provided some updates on the historic multilateral cooperation between U.S. (Office of Foreign Assets Control) and UK (Office of Foreign Sanctions Implementation) sanctions enforcement agencies, U.S. DOJ’s newly formed Kleptocapture Unit, the EU proposal to criminalize violations of EU sanctions, and the status and future of the Russian Elites, Proxies, and Oligarchs (REPO) Task Force. They also focused on immediate proactive measures corporates can take to enhance economic sanctions policies and procedures in order to minimize the risk and impact of increased governmental enforcement in this space.
