IRS Starts to Restaff Some Appeals Positions

Sharon Katz-Pearlman was quoted in a Tax Notes article titled “IRS Starts to Restaff Some Appeals Positions,” covering the IRS’ efforts toward hiring new Appeals officers. In the article, she notes that although the hiring effort is not large in scale, it is expected to positively impact the caseload management at Appeals. Sharon mentions that Appeals Team Case Leaders are struggling to handle their regular caseloads alongside additional cases from Alternative Dispute Resolution programs, which the IRS has been increasingly promoting. She believes that hiring more staff “will definitely help alleviate some of that pressure and help get that timeline to where it was,” though she emphasizes that significant improvements will take time to materialize. Sharon concludes that while practitioners should be pleased with the addition of resources, immediate relief should not be expected, saying “It’ll be a process — we’re not going to see an immediate exhale.”
